Congregations urged over compensation bill

The religious congregations that ran residential institutions where children were abused are to be asked to contribute more towards the €1.2bn bill for compensating victims.

The 18 religious congregations that ran residential institutions where children were abused are to be asked to contribute more towards the €1.2bn bill for compensating victims.

Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn is to write to the congregations within a fortnight.
He made his remarks after Taoiseach Enda Kenny told religious congregations in Dublin there is a responsibility on everybody concerned to conclude a deal on the matter.

Mr Kenny is also calling on these religious congregations to pay more towards the abuse compensation bill.

In the last year you asked us surviours what would we like to see being done with the re compansation fund to my knowledge all survivours wanted any monies to be shared equally , what i dont understand is you already made your minds up and put all monies aside for a statutory fund which everyone refused . I now think you should listen carefully to survisores and end all this pain and let the people move on with some dignity.

It is a terrible injustice on the governments behalf to withold compensation awarded to those who were abused under government and religious care. It is very sad that those in power have a great opportunity to rectify the damage done but instead continue to abuse those who have suffered.

  9. Angry Emily says:

Government: You need to pay out the compensation given for “survivors”. What’s the hold up? What’s the meetings for? it’s really not that hard to sign a check to everyone who were abused and suffered at your hands. What are you doing sitting on your behinds discussing money that doesn’t Belong to you. Millions opens greedy eyes… But take them greedy eyes else where because it’s NOT YOUR MONEY OR MiLLIONS. Do not rob these victims what is rightfully there’s. Stop taking away their rights! Stop victimising them over and over again!!!!!!! Angry!!!!

And now right wing Catholic lobby groups want Ireland to open an embassy in the Vatican which was closed recently . Not only should we not give diplomatic recognition we should expel their agent from Ireland . The daughter companies of this major corporation who sell a product called “Eternal Life ” ( a kind of insurance that covers even the after life and stretches into eternity ) have run rings around several Irish governments and been revealed as a crime syndicate they even challenge that government and refuse to pay for their crimes . I say do as the Belgians did and send in the police and confiscate their assets and carry out arrests . Further more Ireland should issue a European Arrest Warrant for the man who is leader of this syndicate and calls himself Pope .

Nice one Caroline, Nuha and Georgina we need hundreds or better still thousands to make comments so we can push these views forward to where they need to be heard.
The more voices the more chance of us being heard. It is great when people comment here and other sites, we can make an example of the Media who are supposed to spread the news but fail to do so even though they know of the injustice here in Ireland.
This Country may be broke as they say but why take this money from survivors that is very low of a bad Government

  13. Georgina Drinkwater says:

There comes a point when Governments and institutions MUST be held accountable for their actions and injustices. For years this has been pushed aside and ignored whilst victims of abuse and neglect are treated as insignificant. Years pass and yet this great infringement on individuals basic human rights are ignored… It is a clear case of injustice and sets the president for generations to come – therefore if action is not taken to resolve; or at least make steps towards repairing the despair and detrimental damage caused to an entire generation – what example are we setting for generations to come?

  14. nuha says:

government needs to stop taking peoples money and solve this matter as soon as possible as this does not look good to ireland..this also will bring bad impression to the government..

  15. caroline says:

i think the government and those everyone who involved in this matter should stop stealing and taking the money from the victims because the money is supposed to give it as a compensation for the victims.you all need your head to be examine not the victims..do what is right and stop with the stupid corruption.

  16. Robert says:

Mr Guinn your office has made taxes on redress money alone on that that 1.2billion euro, how much tax did you claim back? come on sir don’t lie,?
Poor survivors who had to use the bank payed everytime they went to the bank for some money and paid tax yet this redress was supposed to be un taxable how much did the banks make/ and how much money did the Government make here alone on survivors?

  17. Robert says:

Education minister still trying to grab religious money no word on his rip off dealings with survivors though.
The only conclusion to this matter Minister is that the State realizes they are 100% guilty admitted by the government themselves, now it is the church’s 600 million who should pay for their 100% which is short of the 1.2billion on their side.
STOP PLAYING GAMES WITH PEOPLES LIVES.
IT IS ABOUT THE CHILDREN BEING ABUSED BY THE STATE AND THE RELIGIOUS.
You are claiming this is tax payers money, but you failed the taxpayer yourselves thinking you will get away with it, you and the Religious are 100% guilty.
If you used tax payers money to pay for your 100% guilt that is your problem not the survivors who you fail to mention every single time here.
This is money donated by the people after they paid their taxes to you. You should take your Hands off this money as survivors are still suffering.
This money will help survivors in the damage you and the religious did to survivors HEALTH/DENTAL AND OTHER FORM OF HEALING.
That rip off statuary fund you invented is an insult and taking this money from the religious is robbery from the survivors.
Who gives the Government the right to take this money? you are as guilty as the religious as you stated yourselves.
It will take more than 600 million to put these matters of health right for survivors and you know it.
I hope survivors rise up and make a stand against such corruption.
    We need justice and now.
