It has become a painfully self-evident truth – surely, even to the silent onlookers at the Vatican – that the longer Cardinal Seán Brady stays in place as Primate of All Ireland, the greater the damage inflicted on the reputation of the Catholic Church in Ireland and beyond. This is not simply because his presence has become a reminder of the cover-up of paedophile abuse by priests, but also because it illustrates a continuing problem: that, after all this time, Cardinal Brady just doesn’t get it.
By “get it” I mean that he still seems to believe that he personally behaved appropriately in the circumstances by which the late Father Brendan Smyth, a rapacious paedophile of almost unimaginable moral corruption, was tacitly permitted by the Church to continue brutally abusing children for 40 years, long after the ecclesiastical authorities knew what he was up to.
As set out in last week’s BBC2 documentary This World: The Shame of the Catholic Church, Father (as he then was) Brady was a 36-year-old canon lawyer who was brought in – along with two other priests – to investigate the case of Brendan Boland, a 14-year-old boy who had come forward to expose Fr Smyth as his abuser since the age of 11. Boland supplied names and addresses of other boys and girls who had been abused in similar fashion, and Father Brady contacted one of those boys.
Both Boland and the other boy were required to sign a formal oath of secrecy forbidding them to tell anyone except “authorised priests” what had gone on, and Fr Brady compiled two reports which were sent further up the Church hierarchy. The parents of none of the five children identified by Boland were informed of what had happened: indeed, Smyth continued to abuse two of those very children after the 1975 inquiry, and went on to rape and bugger a number of their younger siblings and cousins as well. I apologise for the explicit language, but evil found its hiding place in euphemism for too long.
The gist of Cardinal Brady’s modern-day argument is that mistakes were made, but that it was primarily the fault of Smyth’s superiors in the Norbertine Order, and that he did everything in his power at the time. He said in response to the documentary: “I had absolutely no authority over Brendan Smyth. Even my bishop had limited authority over him.” And it is in those two words “no authority” that you can hear the tolling bell for a lost conscience.

Well when people talk about the effects of violence on children thay think of televisions or comics but the most influnce comes from religion. as martha says its all about extreeme voilence. killings torture. the story of job is the stuff nightmares are made of. never mind what god gave back to him. some things such as his kids werent interchangable. violence breeds violence.

Yes there are many ways of training. instilling fear into people. its turned so many into automates. a reguler diet of it in confessional boxes.I dident know what to say in confessions because we dident have a chance to commit any sins so i improvised. but later on i discovered it dident matter anyway as it was just another way of pretence of power. bunch of bullys thay were proberly the same as children.

You are back there, in “Artane” as a boy and no adult can hear your screams … because there were so very few adults to be found in Ireland then, or now.
The majority of Irish adults were SO terrorised by their own personal experience as children that all they could they could do, as individuals, was to to take care of themselves. They had no energy left to care for their fellow humans …

Hi everyone just got an email from a very good friend, during my time in 50’s Artane. “Tommy”. When his father died, in the early 50’s, he his mother and brother were evicted from their Dublin home by the State. All three lived out of a pram, in the Dublin streets, begging for survival, sleeping on the kerbside each night. With barely enough to feed the boys, eventually winter took its tole upon their mothers health. One frosty morning, she failed to awake. The brothers were hysterical, Gardai took the boys into custody and quickly transported to Artane Prison School. Apparently their deceased mother had lain in the street for several hours, before being removed. “Tommy” though quite tall, was a gentle giant. His brother very withdrawn. However, about 2004 Tommy and his brother applied for Redress. His brother asked to address the Board and was interrogated by some members of the catholic clergy. He was so traumatised, that he took his own life. That was the last surviving member of “Tommys ” family, gone. Tommy and I are now brothers. I have to admit that my armour has been severely damaged. Re your post above. I can relate to a lot of that as I have vivid memories of being subjected to HORROR stories of saints and martyrs being torn to bits by lions – as per Roman Gladiatorial arenas, you know, the “Amusement Parks’ of the day… And all that TERRORISING was part of the daily curriculum in a Dublin National school, when I was a toddler in 1950’s Ireland, along with all the other (50+) kids in the classroom. Needless to say we were petrified …
You should write a book about your life, Pauline, if only for the therapeutic value for yourself.

Well i agree with you there jarl. i was sent from goldenbridge with 3 others to pass the school leaving certificate. it was the first time i had heard of algebra or geometre. i dident have a clue. all our lessons in goldenbridge were based on storys of starving lions and starved saints. it was all to do with protecting verginitys but no mention of the link between that and childbearing.as if we were mini nuns. it was useless outside. when i escaped from there i made my way to england. but all my family had been warned by the local priest about how ungreatfull so i had to leave. i lived in the public toilets because of the luxery of closed doors. it took me a few years to be able to look out for myself. it doesnt help at all to learn all that stuff.
Oliver – You may find it useful to link with this organisation. They have been very active in America and the Vatican and have very good legal representation and they are now linking up with similar organisations across Europe. They were largely featured in the Documentary “Someone should have heard” (currently available on Foxtel in Australia in `Free on Demand’ for the next three days).

The American and English sites have not got a clue, although their articles are quite civilised, the lack the colourful banter of the Irish articles. Our topics are very informative and confrontational to our churchly enemies. No Pauline, Religion should NOT be `taught’ in schools. Religious organisations do not `teach’ their religion, they indoctrinate and brainwash children and offer them no alternative evidence or understanding. What should be taught are most of the Ideas and Beliefs which have been developed over many centuries, and which encompass Socrates, Plato, Confucius and other great philosophers, the religions based on the Sacred Feminine, and other `religions’ such as Taoism, Shintoism, Hinduism etc etc and including the Atheist and Humanist beliefs of today, as well as the Christian and Muslim religions. Religions are nothing more than a set of Beliefs based on factual evidence and critical reasoning and where such factual evidence and critical reasoning are weak, as in Christianity, then they call it `Faith’ and it is usually `blind’ Faith with little applied intelligence by the individual.
If children were TAUGHT such ideas and beliefs, then they could make an informed and reasoned choice of what they wish to believe to satisfy their personal spiritual development. Of course such heresy would be vigorously opposed by the organised religions as it would be the death knell for them all, if people actually gained such knowledge and began to think for themselves.
The Modus Operandi of organised religions today is to `Indoctrinate, Indoctrinate, Indoctrinate’ and the sheeple don’t question or discuss, but meekly accept. That is how such religious Cults exercise their power and control over people. The people of Ireland have been sleep-walking in a religion-induced stupor for centuries and its long overdue that they shook themselves awake and exercised that vigorous intellect of which they are so very capable.

Its true that in order to give proper schooling to children its time to realise that there are many different religions in every country now . the priests and nuns are totally out of touch with reality.if tolerance is going to work well this is an important element. teachers from all walks of life would be better for everyone.all religions claim to hold the truth. But no one knows.

From what I have observed of Sean Brady in recent days, his attitude is that the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church is above that of the Common Law which applies to the citizens of a country, or is supposed to anyway. My impression is he really believes that to be the case. That then, would mean Brady (and his ilk) have been conditioned as chiildren to believe they are morally superior to ALL other human beings. You obviously are not aware of what it is like to even try and live some kind of life being tortured. The Government normally boast about tax returns when it suits them but they only published the bill of redress. Power involves blackmail between the holders. If he was an area manager for a fast food chain he’d be under arrest right now. But he’s a Prince of a global Empire with dirt on everyone.
Why are those men such as Brady not under arrest and facing criminal charges for seeking to pervert the course of justice by concealing crimes, and thereby being accessories after tha fact, to those crimes.?. The Garda are grossly failing in their duties.
