The longer Cardinal Seán Brady stays in place as Primate of All Ireland, the greater the damage inflicted on the reputation of the Catholic Church in Ireland and beyond.

By Jenny McCartney
It has become a painfully self-evident truth – surely, even to the silent onlookers at the Vatican – that the longer Cardinal Seán Brady stays in place as Primate of All Ireland, the greater the damage inflicted on the reputation of the Catholic Church in Ireland and beyond. This is not simply because his presence has become a reminder of the cover-up of paedophile abuse by priests, but also because it illustrates a continuing problem: that, after all this time, Cardinal Brady just doesn’t get it.
By “get it” I mean that he still seems to believe that he personally behaved appropriately in the circumstances by which the late Father Brendan Smyth, a rapacious paedophile of almost unimaginable moral corruption, was tacitly permitted by the Church to continue brutally abusing children for 40 years, long after the ecclesiastical authorities knew what he was up to.
As set out in last week’s BBC2 documentary This World: The Shame of the Catholic Church, Father (as he then was) Brady was a 36-year-old canon lawyer who was brought in – along with two other priests – to investigate the case of Brendan Boland, a 14-year-old boy who had come forward to expose Fr Smyth as his abuser since the age of 11. Boland supplied names and addresses of other boys and girls who had been abused in similar fashion, and Father Brady contacted one of those boys.
Both Boland and the other boy were required to sign a formal oath of secrecy forbidding them to tell anyone except “authorised priests” what had gone on, and Fr Brady compiled two reports which were sent further up the Church hierarchy. The parents of none of the five children identified by Boland were informed of what had happened: indeed, Smyth continued to abuse two of those very children after the 1975 inquiry, and went on to rape and bugger a number of their younger siblings and cousins as well. I apologise for the explicit language, but evil found its hiding place in euphemism for too long.
The gist of Cardinal Brady’s modern-day argument is that mistakes were made, but that it was primarily the fault of Smyth’s superiors in the Norbertine Order, and that he did everything in his power at the time. He said in response to the documentary: “I had absolutely no authority over Brendan Smyth. Even my bishop had limited authority over him.” And it is in those two words “no authority” that you can hear the tolling bell for a lost conscience.

  1. So the butler did it . the leaks of information from the vatican were the work of a butler. Paddy dont you think it would be better for all if a human rights person went to see him. he is imprisoned in the vatican prison.if thay forgave him as thay are supposed to he might be safe but i wouldnt be sure.

  2. Dear Martha, thank you for the comment.

However, having spent 7 years imprisoned and I mean imprisoned there and terrible experience for any child. Yes, I do scream a lot and not without justification. No it won’t be over util this load of Irish Roman Catholic sum has vanished from this planet. I sill have the will, and will soon find a way. Oh by the way Martha, am surprised that Sister Mary, failed to do her regular spell check. So Mary Spellchecker must have gone to Mass and failed in her duty to demean us. All the best Martha. Hope our kind made an impact at the Bootlickers Head Office (cathedral). Regards Twisted Oliver. Ps. Am off to bed, its 12-42 am Mon morn, here in NSW Australia. Good night all of our kind.

  3. Well when people talk about the effects of violence on children thay think of televisions or comics but the most influnce comes from religion. as martha says its all about extreeme voilence. killings torture. the story of job is the stuff nightmares are made of. never mind what god gave back to him. some things such as his kids werent interchangable. violence breeds violence.

Dear Jarl, thank you for that contact, have sent them a brief outline of my, so far failed attempt to harness the help of our useless Irish Euro Mps. And to post at will a more detailed account of my 14 yrs as a child prisoner of the Most hated State upon this planet and its bedroom antics with our Brutal Irish Roman Catholic Church jailors and their UnGodly, shameful bootlicking, disgusting, deceitful, hypocritical, anything you can add, liars. Brothers and sisters, I know that I have missed out about Twenty other descriptions of these horrible people, our enslavers and their righteous supporters of these Abusers. Come on everyone add a few just for their Sunday Mass, guilt. Confession, me assets. A very Twisted Oliver.

  5. Yes there are many ways of training. instilling fear into people. its turned so many into automates. a reguler diet of it in confessional boxes.I dident know what to say in confessions because we dident have a chance to commit any sins so i improvised. but later on i discovered it dident matter anyway as it was just another way of pretence of power. bunch of bullys thay were proberly the same as children.

Oops, sorry, I meant COLONISATION – or – coloniZation …

    Goodnight everybody,

  7. Martha says:

Dear Oliver, it so happens I am awake at this late hour …

I have read your your words: I have listened to your voice SCREAMING into the wilderness as it does … but who is listening?

You are back there, in “Artane” as a boy and no adult can hear your screams … because there were so very few adults to be found in Ireland then, or now.

The majority of Irish adults were SO terrorised by their own personal experience as children that all they could they could do, as individuals, was to to take care of themselves. They had no energy left to care for their fellow humans …

That’s what the Vatican – aka the Roman Empire did to the Irish.
    Its called “Conolization” …

  8. Hi everyone just got an email from a very good friend, during my time in 50’s Artane. “Tommy”. When his father died, in the early 50’s, he his mother and brother were evicted from their Dublin home by the State. All three lived out of a pram, in the Dublin streets, begging for survival, sleeping on the kerbside each night. With barely enough to feed the boys, eventually winter took its tole upon their mothers health. One frosty morning, she failed to awake. The brothers were hysterical, Gardai took the boys into custody and quickly transported to Artane Prison School. Apparently their deceased mother had lain in the street for several hours, before being removed. “Tommy” though quite tall, was a gentle giant. His brother very withdrawn. However, about 2004 Tommy and his brother applied for Redress. His brother asked to address the Board and was interrogated by some members of the catholic clergy. He was so traumatised, that he took his own life. That was the last surviving member of “Tommys ” family, gone. Tommy and I are now brothers. I have to admit that my armour has been severely damaged. How low, will our Enslavers stoop. Regards to all. Twisted Oliver.

  9. Oh Pauline, what a dark character, it is good that you stating to shame your Roman Catholic enslavers. It is quite tragic, the way you had to survive, in order to escape all the Irish hypocracy. Living in a public toilet. Martha is correct. Write your story. Great story. Regards Twisted Oliver. Come on everyone, tell all and shame our Irish hypocrites.

  10. Martha says:

    Hi Pauline,

Re your post above. I can relate to a lot of that as I have vivid memories of being subjected to HORROR stories of saints and martyrs being torn to bits by lions – as per Roman Gladiatorial arenas, you know, the “Amusement Parks’ of the day… And all that TERRORISING was part of the daily curriculum in a Dublin National school, when I was a toddler in 1950’s Ireland, along with all the other (50+) kids in the classroom. Needless to say we were petrified …

You should write a book about your life, Pauline, if only for the therapeutic value for yourself.

    Kind regards,

  11. Well i agree with you there jarl. i was sent from goldenbridge with 3 others to pass the school leaving certificate. it was the first time i had heard of algebra or geometre. i dident have a clue. all our lessons in goldenbridge were based on storys of starving lions and starved saints. it was all to do with protecting verginitys but no mention of the link between that and if we were mini nuns. it was useless outside. when i escaped from there i made my way to england. but all my family had been warned by the local priest about how ungreatfull so i had to leave. i lived in the public toilets because of the luxery of closed doors. it took me a few years to be able to look out for myself. it doesnt help at all to learn all that stuff.

  12. Jarl Ragnvald says:

Oliver – You may find it useful to link with this organisation. They have been very active in America and the Vatican and have very good legal representation and they are now linking up with similar organisations across Europe. They were largely featured in the Documentary “Someone should have heard” (currently available on Foxtel in Australia in `Free on Demand’ for the next three days).

  13. Hi Jarl, just a little note re other sites on Abuse Victims issues, is the best site and I mean globally. The American and English sites have not got a clue, although their articles are quite civilised, the lack the colourful banter of the Irish articles. Our topics are very informative and confrontational to our churchly enemies. Our comments are of a quality, that cut like a very sharp sword, inflicting deep wounds, leaving everlasting scars for all to see. This is the stuff of real victims. We Irish Victims are the first of our race to confront our ex Vatican and Irish Roman Catholic Enslavers with favourable results. Believe me, when I tell you, that this Pope is hanging on by a thread. Resignation, is foremost in his weary mind. We Irish Victims, with our supporters, have fulfilled a prophesy written hundreds of years ago, with the severity of our writing and referred to as very cutting. We Irish Victims employ the pen(keypad) as we historically used the sword. Our ex Roman Catholic masters, were taken by surprise, ambushed by what the viewed as uneducated idiots. But they did not allow for our intelligence and dogged persistence to see it through. I know that there is always an element of doubt, but hatred and I mean our kind of hatred, knows no bounds. So thanks again Paddy Doyle, brothers and sisters, supporters and keep writing and be proud of your Criminal Records acquired as infants and as very young children. Regards to all our kind. Twisted Oliver.

  14. Jarl Ragnvald says:

No Pauline, Religion should NOT be `taught’ in schools. Religious organisations do not `teach’ their religion, they indoctrinate and brainwash children and offer them no alternative evidence or understanding. What should be taught are most of the Ideas and Beliefs which have been developed over many centuries, and which encompass Socrates, Plato, Confucius and other great philosophers, the religions based on the Sacred Feminine, and other `religions’ such as Taoism, Shintoism, Hinduism etc etc and including the Atheist and Humanist beliefs of today, as well as the Christian and Muslim religions. Religions are nothing more than a set of Beliefs based on factual evidence and critical reasoning and where such factual evidence and critical reasoning are weak, as in Christianity, then they call it `Faith’ and it is usually `blind’ Faith with little applied intelligence by the individual.

If children were TAUGHT such ideas and beliefs, then they could make an informed and reasoned choice of what they wish to believe to satisfy their personal spiritual development. Of course such heresy would be vigorously opposed by the organised religions as it would be the death knell for them all, if people actually gained such knowledge and began to think for themselves.

The Modus Operandi of organised religions today is to `Indoctrinate, Indoctrinate, Indoctrinate’ and the sheeple don’t question or discuss, but meekly accept. That is how such religious Cults exercise their power and control over people. The people of Ireland have been sleep-walking in a religion-induced stupor for centuries and its long overdue that they shook themselves awake and exercised that vigorous intellect of which they are so very capable.

“With apologies to Orangutans everywhere for comparing them to a Roman Catholic cleric.”
Well, he (Sean Brady) is the PRIMATE of Ireland. Makes one wonder, doesn’t it???

Very good Martha. Very funny. Athletic I say !

  16. Its true that in order to give proper schooling to children its time to realise that there are many different religions in every country now . the priests and nuns are totally out of touch with reality.if tolerance is going to work well this is an important element. teachers from all walks of life would be better for everyone.all religions claim to hold the truth. But no one knows.

  17. Martha says:

    Jarl Ragnvald wrote:-

” … Irish law is based on Roman Canon law which was based on a moral code developed by the Christian religions.”

From what I have observed of Sean Brady in recent days, his attitude is that the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church is above that of the Common Law which applies to the citizens of a country, or is supposed to anyway. My impression is he really believes that to be the case. That then, would mean Brady (and his ilk) have been conditioned as chiildren to believe they are morally superior to ALL other human beings. Now, that’s what I call having a fantastic (is that the right word?) sense of Self Confidence! I’ll have a pint of what he’s drinking … lol!

“How could Brady not therefore know that what he was doing was morally corrupt and illegal when he’d been preaching that moral code every day?”

Well Jarl, you know that saying: “Those who can DO and those who can’t PREACH!” There’s a lot of truth in that …

Think I’ll go off now and get dressed up in my long red frock and glitter stuff …

  18. Martha says:

    Portia wrote:-

” … all children in the care of Catholic Clergy remain at extreme risk throughout the world from ongoing, encouraged molestation. “

And yet, in Ireland today, the Catholic Church still has control of over 90% of our national schools. The question remains, therefore, what are the vast majority of Irish parents doing about it? Not a lot, obviously …

  19. Martha says:

Jarl Ragnvald asks: ” Why is Brady not in jail?.”

I suppose because Official Ireland is still of the Roman Catholic mindset? What other reason could there be?

  21. Robert says:

my answer to some foolhasnooneasked you are such a arrogant person off course people have been murdered, but CHILDREN AND WOMEN HAVE BEEN RAPED, BUTCHERED, STARVED,SCREWED IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY, DIVIDED FAMILIES BROTHERS AND SISTERS RIPPED APART, AND THEN THIS IS CALLED CIVILIZED? SO IF YOU HAVE NOT THEN AT LEAST TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO LIVE A WHOLE LIFE OF TORTURE this is living torture you have no idea what it is like to *(( live))* with such pain and suffering, we all feel for those who were murdered millions died in wars we all have family who fought and never came back just to give us life how dare you disrespect that. But to day that has been destroyed by The pope and his Mob.
And the Irish Government want this money for themselves which is even sicker, they GOT their money back in taxes OVER 50%, People who suffered this wide scale of abuse are still to this very day suffering, this Government is where your anger should be, allowing this torture to THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT CHILDREN AND WOMEN AS YOUNG AS 14
You obviously are not aware of what it is like to even try and live some kind of life being tortured. The Government normally boast about tax returns when it suits them but they only published the bill of redress. They claimed they were guilty as the Catholic Church but now instead of giving this compensation from the Religious where it belongs they are taking it as the church’s 50% toward the cost of the bill, this means all the tax back and 50% on top, why can’t this be seen as the other half of compensation to the survivors of their abuse, that is what it was supposed to be in the first place.
So now does this mean two criminals who commit the same crime share the fine 50 50 each or only do 50 50 each of the time and noting goes to the victims of their crime? You have no idea what damage has been done in the name of a so called god of evil in Ireland and other countries the Vatican is the richest bank in the world it has taken every cent from the poor with ABSOLUTELY NO RETURN they owe the poor with interest for this fraud.

  22. Jarl Ragnvald says:

Brady’s excuse that none of the Roman Catholic heirarchy had any control over Brendan Smyth is even worse than Pontius Pilate’s handwashing exercise. Irish law is based on Roman Canon law which was based on a moral code developed by the Christian religions. How could Brady not therefore know that what he was doing was morally corrupt and illegal when he’d been preaching that moral code every day?.
These events of the mass sexual abuse of children by paedophile priests and the cover-ups, defences, and protections given by their leaders, are again an illustration with the many other Crimes against Humanity and atrocities committed by this Cult that the Roman Catholic Church is morally corrupt and deficient. The people of Ireland deserve far better spiritual and moral leadership and its long overdue that these criminals and sodomists were sent scuttling back to Rome. Ireland’s children will never be safe as long as this Catholic Cult of moral decadents are present on Irish soil.

  23. Portia says:

The Roman Catholic men of god know exactly what this is about. It is about their belief in the sacred rite of molestation where they/men of god claim the divine right to rape children and steal their innocence/light.

“To date, the Roman Cult, otherwise known as the Vatican is the only organization in history to orchestrate as a “sacred” religious ceremony the systematic and widespread encouragement of its clergy to abuse of children from as late as the 14th Century.

The physical and mental abuse of tens of millions of children for 700 years by the clergy of the Vatican is the largest unbroken “child abuse ring” of all time, still in complete operation througout its priesthood today.

The motivation for such evil remains the dedication of the innocence of children to the demon god of sacrifice- Moloch either consciously or unconsciously by the Roman Catholic clergy and some Christian clergy.

Due to the lack of understanding of religious terms and the true meaning of words, some parents with children under the care of Catholic clergy mistakenly believe that the Roman Cult of the Vatican have openly repudiated the “sacred act” of molestation—a false assumption.

The Vatican – always precise with their words—has condemned pedophilia which is a modern term and has absolutely nothing to do with the ancient worship of Moloch, nor the religious term molest/molestation.

No parent who values the sanctity of the innocence of their children should ever believe that their children are safe in the hands of Catholic Clergy until the Roman Cult and Vatican is disbanded. Until that day, all children in the care of Catholic Clergy remain at extreme risk throughout the world from ongoing, encouraged molestation. “

  24. I think the overall message is that faced with a problem he was helpless. but a helpless 36 or 33 as is said also knows very well what he was writing about. but since there seems to be nobody in the catholic church who feels responsable well why leave them in power. how could he guide anyone. i think that religions all have the same attitude. we all know how to phone the police. you are right Paddy he just doesnt seem to understand what this is about.

  25. FXR says:

Power involves blackmail between the holders. If he was an area manager for a fast food chain he’d be under arrest right now. But he’s a Prince of a global Empire with dirt on everyone.

  26. Jarl Ragnvald says:

Why are those men such as Brady not under arrest and facing criminal charges for seeking to pervert the course of justice by concealing crimes, and thereby being accessories after tha fact, to those crimes.?. The Garda are grossly failing in their duties. Mothers have been arrested and have lost their children because they failed to protect their children from abusive, violent fathers – yet these men are being protected and defended for a crime on a much, much greater scale and then they provided even more opportunities for these paedophiles to continue with their crimes. Why is Brady not in jail?.

  27. FXR says:

He claims he had no guidelines. In scrambling to save his own neck he admitted that despite being steeped in Roman Catholicism he could no more tell right from wrong than an Orangutan* That just shows what a morally bankrupt system Roman Catholcism is and why children in 92% of our schools should not be brainwashed with it.

*With apologies to Oranutans everywhere for comparing them to a Roman Catholic cleric.
